Just now I was writing up a technical appendix concerning the asymptotic covariance matrix of an estimator. I was listening to will.i.am's new song, "It's a New Day", for probably the fifth time today. When he got to the part where he sings,
'Cause we weren't fighting for nothing
And the soldiers weren't fighting
For nothing
No, Martin wasn't dreaming for nothing
And Lincoln didn't change it for nothing
And children weren't crying for nothing
I just started crying.
This is unusual for me.
As I wrote on election night, I supported Obama because I thought he was the best candidate, not because he's black. But just now, it really hit me, just how big a deal this is for America.
